Research areas
Cultures, Politics and Society is a multidisciplinary department, home to scholars in sociology, political science, international relations, anthropology, history, political philosophy, linguistics, geography, economics and law. These multi-faceted spheres of knowledge complement each other in addressing the complexity of contemporary social, political and cultural phenomena with an eye to their long-term dynamics and many geographical settings with a highly integrated multidisciplinary approach. Thanks to the contribution of national and international networks, the Department pursues research traditions and breaks new ground in studying the peoples and societies of Europe and many areas around the world, from the Americas to Africa and Asia, with a particular focus on China, India, Myanmar and Oceania. Applying the many paradigms and methods developed in each of the disciplines it represents, the Department works to advance both basic and applied research.
The Department’s eight disciplinary areas (see below) provide a varied and lively research scene centring on several major issues: Inclusion and social inequalities, Innovation, technologies and the local factor, Regulation and representation, International relations, Development cooperation and area studies, Historical, political and anthropological thought, Migrations and interculturality.
